Exploring Yamas and Niyamas
with Richard Sherman

Saturday Sept. 4
1:30pm to 5:30pm
$45* (a portion of this wksp proceeds will go to support our non-profit community class)

The Yamas and Niyamas are the core foundation of our practice, like a detailed map, guiding you on the amazing journey of life. The Yamas and Niyamas free you to take ownership of your life and guide it towards the fulfillment you peruse. Yoga isn't a mere form of exercise, yoga isn't all about lengthening, twisting,up-dog or down-dog.

Yoga is about feeling alive and vibrant from head to toe. It is the sacred ground where you can cultivate qualities such as acceptance, non-attachment, strength, endurance, truthfulness and perhaps a bit of humility.
"Yoga is the pathway, but it is our responsibilities to transmit these qualities in to our everyday life".

Through the practice of Yamas (ethical and core guidelines) and Niyamas (personal values and disciplines),this workshop will take us into the journey of why we do things and how we might look at things in a different light. Perhaps you have heard teachers use expressions in class like Ahimsa, Satya or Santosha. These words come from the first and second limbs of Yoga, they are defined as Non violence, Truthfulness and Contentment. All over the world most students begin their yoga journey with asana which is actually the third branch and completely skip the first two, Yama and Niyamas.
In this workshop we look beyond the mat (but be prepared to move) as we explore Yama's and Niyama's in relation to our everyday lives as well as our asana practice.
We’ll also touch on the fourth limb; Pranayama and perhaps a bit of stillness. It’s an interactive workshop; so be prepared to work with the playful spirit that is inherent in each of us!

“Fearlessness, joyfulness and the power to manifest ones dreams means you are getting further in your practice”
~Swami Rama

PRACTICE :To understand the basic poses and  practice at your level on each pose.
BREATHE: Build awareness of the breath in each pose and learn new breathing techniques.
CHANT: Learn the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
COMMIT: Learn new, more challenging  poses and commit to work deeper, safely at your own level.

Firm understanding of Sun Salutation A. How to use even breathing in Sun Salutation A. Discover your body in standing poses
Challenging poses: Chaturanga Dandasana

Forward Bends
Forward bends use gravity to help release tension and pain from the body. Its effects are introverting associated with chest compression and exhalation which induce relaxation and stimulate the
Parasympathetic nervous system.
Challenging poses: Bhakasana, Shoulder stand

Twists

Twists are important for spinal health. The twist imposed on the spine and the whole trunk exercises the muscles, makes the spinal column more flexile and stimulates the spinal nerves.
Challenging poses: Parivritta Trikonasana

Back Bends:
Backbends can also be called hyper extensions, they turn the body out to face the world. Backbends are stimulating and uplifting. They expand the chest and encourage inhalation.

Challenging poses: Dhanurasana , Urdhva Dhanurasana

Laterals:
Lateral Practice
Challenging poses: Vasistasana, Pincha Mayurasana (Forearm Stand)

Inversions:

Inverted asanas reverse the action of gravity on the body and the orientation shifts towards the head (sirsa). Similarly, on the emotional and psychic levels, inverted asanas
turn everything upside down, shed a new light on old patterns of behavior and being.

Challenging poses: Sirsasana (Head stand), Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Hand Stand)

Moving Meditation through Surya Namaskara A
with Chanti

Saturday Sept. 25
2-4:30pm
$35

This workshop is designed to help students understand the mechanics of Sun Salutation "A".
We"ll break down each of the poses in the salutation and bring awareness to the movements during the transitions from one asana to the next.
Learn how to breathe during the sun salutations and understand how the breath flows and gives us the energy to move through our practice.
Beginners will learn where they can pause or adjust the salutation
and students that have a regular practice will begin to work deeper with awareness and ease.
